George Desmond Kamurasi has spent the season captaining SE Dons in the ninth tier of English football. He has now reportedly been selected to lead an entire kingdom.

The 36-year-old goalkeeper, widely known as “Big G”, has been chosen as the proposed next omukama, or king, of the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda.

According to Ugandan reports, a 21-member royal succession committee met in Fort Portal on Friday to consider who should succeed the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

Eighteen members attended the meeting, with 15 reportedly voting in favour of Kamurasi.

His eligibility is not based entirely on commanding his penalty area.

Kamurasi belongs to Tooro’s Babiito royal family and is a grandson of former king George Rukidi III. His father was the younger brother of King Oyo’s father, making the SE Dons captain a first cousin of the late monarch.

King Oyo died in late August at the age of 34 while receiving medical treatment in the United States. He had occupied the throne since 1995, when he became king at just three years old.

The Tooro Kingdom has an estimated population of approximately 800,000. Uganda remains a republic, meaning its traditional monarchs fulfil cultural and ceremonial roles rather than exercising direct political power.

Kamurasi’s accession has not yet been formally confirmed. The chairman of the succession committee has declined to publicly verify the reported decision, while separate claims that King Oyo left an heir have added uncertainty to the process.

The goalkeeper has also yet to comment publicly on whether he is prepared to exchange his life in south-east London for a royal palace in Uganda.

Until the succession is settled, Kamurasi remains captain and goalkeeper of SE Dons.

It is already a fairly unusual holding position for a possible king.
