Arda Guler avoids red card after alleged elbow on Peque before scoring against Sevilla

Sevilla demanded a sending-off after the off-the-ball incident, but the Real Madrid midfielder stayed on and opened the scoring.

Arda Guler escaped a red card after an alleged elbow on Sevilla’s Peque Fernandez, then put Real Madrid ahead in their 4-1 LaLiga win on Sunday.

The first-half incident at the Santiago Bernabeu happened away from the ball, with the match still goalless.

Peque was pulling Guler’s shirt as the pair ran alongside each other. The Madrid midfielder swung his arm backwards and Peque went down, prompting Sevilla’s players to demand a sending-off.

The footage shows the shirt being stretched and Guler’s arm movement, although the exact point of contact is difficult to establish from the available angles.

The confrontation escalated when Dean Huijsen pulled Peque up from the turf, bringing players from both teams together. Huijsen and Sevilla’s Felix Correia received yellow cards.

Guler, however, received neither a yellow nor a red following the VAR check and remained on the pitch.

He soon made that count. Collecting a pass from Yan Diomande, Guler struck from outside the penalty area into the top corner to break the deadlock.

Kylian Mbappe subsequently scored twice and Diomande added Madrid’s fourth, while Manu Bueno scored Sevilla’s only goal.
