Manchester United’s opening Premier League defeat to Hull City has produced another problem after the club were found to have played without the required number of competition badges on their shirts.
United displayed the Premier League logo on the right sleeve of their third kit during the 2–0 defeat at the MKM Stadium, but the left sleeve was left blank.
Premier League Rule M.15 requires clubs without a commercial sleeve sponsor to display the competition’s badge on both arms. United are currently without one after their £20 million-a-year agreement with technology company DXC expired in May.
The club had expected to secure a replacement sponsor but began the season with the space still available. The absence of any commercial branding meant a second Premier League badge should have occupied it instead.
United and the Premier League are reportedly aware of the oversight, with the club receiving a polite reminder rather than a formal sanction. The correct badges are expected to appear on both sleeves when Michael Carrick’s side face Ipswich Town at Old Trafford.
Saturday’s defeat left Carrick with concerns over United’s defending, pressing and failure to score against newly promoted opposition. The Premier League has at least provided precise instructions for correcting one of them.
