Liverpool are at risk of completing the unusual achievement of building a Liverpool team without anybody from Liverpool.
The club have fielded at least one Scouser in every season since their formation in 1892, creating an unbroken local presence lasting 134 years.
That sequence is now in jeopardy following Curtis Jones’s move to Inter Milan for approximately £30 million.
Jones made 228 appearances for his boyhood club after progressing through Liverpool’s academy and establishing himself in the first team. He became its most prominent local representative after Trent Alexander-Arnold left Anfield for Real Madrid in 2025.
His departure does not officially end the tradition, but it leaves Liverpool relying on considerably less established options to preserve it.
Jayden Danns was the only other Liverpool-born player to make a senior appearance last season. That consisted of 15 minutes during a Carabao Cup tie against Southampton.
Goalkeeper Harvey Davies is also from Liverpool but has yet to make his senior debut and currently sits some distance from becoming the club’s first choice.
Liverpool’s opening Premier League squad of the new season contained several academy graduates, although none were born in the city. Developing your own players and developing somebody from the immediate area have become two separate recruitment strategies.
The situation represents a considerable change from an era in which Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman, Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard provided a regular local presence. Alexander-Arnold and Jones subsequently continued the line, making more than 200 appearances each.
Jürgen Klopp once spoke about his ambition to create a team full of Scousers. Liverpool must now find enough playing time for one.
Danns could maintain the record simply by making a senior appearance before the end of the season. However, his route into the attack has narrowed as Liverpool continue assembling one of the most expensive forward lines in football.
After 134 consecutive seasons, the club’s next important recruitment challenge may be locating somebody from Liverpool.
