Hull Fans Cheer as Manchester United’s Trains Home Are Cancelled

Hull City supporters found another reason to celebrate during their 2–0 victory over Manchester United when the stadium announcer confirmed that trains back to Manchester had been cancelled.

United were already trailing through goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy when the announcement was made in the 73rd minute.

“The 15:03 and 16:03 services towards Manchester have been cancelled,” supporters were told over the MKM Stadium tannoy.

The information was intended to help passengers arrange alternative transport. Hull fans responded by cheering before informing the away end: “You’re going home in a taxi.”

Manchester United had travelled to Hull hoping to begin their Premier League season with three points. By the 73rd minute, victory was increasingly unlikely and catching the 15:03 had become impossible.

The disruption completed a difficult afternoon for Michael Carrick’s side, who were beaten by a newly promoted team playing their first Premier League match in nine years.

Hull’s victory was their first league win over United in 52 years. The home support therefore celebrated the result, their return to the top flight and an unexpected development in regional transport infrastructure.

United’s travelling supporters were left to find another route across the approximately 100 miles separating Hull and Manchester.

Hull had secured three points. United supporters were advised to check the latest service information.
