Declan Rice’s Community Shield celebrations encountered an unexpected problem when the trophy itself hit him in the face following Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Manchester City.

The midfielder was celebrating with supporters at the Principality Stadium after Arsenal comfortably defeated City to claim the first silverware of the new season.

Rice lifted the Community Shield above his head during the celebrations, only for the supporting stand on the back of the trophy to swing down and catch him directly in the face.

The England international initially looked slightly surprised by the development before laughing it off with his teammates and continuing the celebrations.

It represented one of the few successful attempts to trouble an Arsenal player during an afternoon in which Mikel Arteta’s side had encountered relatively little difficulty against Manchester City.

Riccardo Calafiori opened the scoring after just 24 seconds before Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard completed a convincing 3-0 victory.

Rice had started the match on the bench before replacing Bruno Guimarães at half-time and was eventually able to collect his second Community Shield as an Arsenal player.

Collecting it proved marginally more difficult than winning it.

Arsenal had successfully negotiated Manchester City.

The trophy required slightly more care.
