Cristiano Ronaldo handed 30-day Portugal ban and €255 fine but could return for next match

The captain's suspension is backdated to 1 October, leaving him eligible for Portugal's November fixtures if selected.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended for 30 days and fined €255 for leaving Portugal’s training camp, but the punishment will expire before their next international match.

The Portuguese Football Federation’s disciplinary council announced its decision on Monday after the captain walked out of the camp in Copenhagen on 30 September, ahead of a Nations League game against Denmark.

The length of the suspension initially suggests a month away from the national team. However, Ronaldo has already served most of it.

Why Ronaldo could return for Portugal’s next game

The ban runs from 1 October until 30 October, with the period Ronaldo spent under provisional suspension deducted from the final punishment.

That meant 19 days had already been served when the decision was announced, leaving 11 remaining.

Portugal’s next match is against Denmark on 14 November, followed by Wales on 17 November. The suspension therefore leaves Ronaldo available for both fixtures, although a recall remains a decision for head coach Jorge Jesus.

The ruling settles the disciplinary punishment. It does not confirm when Ronaldo will next wear a Portugal shirt.

What led to Ronaldo’s Portugal walkout?

Ronaldo left the squad after a disagreement with Jesus over his role, having been an unused substitute against Norway.

He accused the coach of breaking promises about his involvement. Jesus denied making an agreement over team selection.

In a statement issued on 6 October, Ronaldo apologised for leaving his team-mates and accepted that his conduct deserved punishment, while making clear he remained available to represent Portugal.

The disciplinary ruling also recorded his admission of the facts and considered his contribution to football and sporting achievements when determining the sanction.

With the ban ending before the next international window, attention now turns to whether Jesus includes him in November’s squad.
