Lisandro Martinez apologises in second statement after calling out Man Utd hierarchy

The United defender apologised after meeting club bosses, a day after his first statement stopped short of doing so.

Lisandro Martinez has apologised for his criticism of Manchester United’s hierarchy after meeting Michael Carrick and club officials, a day after his first statement stopped short of an apology.

The defender posted again on Instagram on Thursday following talks about his comments after United’s 2–0 Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid.

Martinez had questioned the club’s recruitment and demanded greater accountability beyond the manager and players. He has now accepted that airing his frustration publicly did not help United.

Martinez admits his comments did not help United

Martinez described Thursday’s meeting with the manager and club leadership as positive, saying they had discussed what happened after the match.

He explained that frustration with the defeat had led him to express his feelings at the wrong time and place, and apologised.

“Our club is at its best when we are all united, and I recognise that my words in that moment did not help with that.”

The defender also expressed confidence that everyone at United was working towards bringing success back to the club.

His first Instagram statement offered an explanation

Wednesday’s post had acknowledged anger and frustration while defending the ambition behind his remarks.

Martinez said he wanted United competing for major honours and accepted that the players needed to demand more of themselves. He also expressed support for his team-mates and manager, without explicitly apologising.

His second statement followed the meeting with Carrick and senior officials. United considered the matter closed, according to Reuters, which reported that the public apology was Martinez’s decision and that any internal disciplinary action would remain private.
