‘Take me off’: Gary Neville asks Sky Sports to stop putting him on Man City games
The pundit praised City’s Anfield performance but said their unresolved financial case made covering their matches difficult.
Gary Neville has asked Sky Sports to take him off Manchester City matches for the next few months, saying the uncertainty surrounding their financial case makes it difficult to assess their performances.
The pundit made the request after covering City’s 3-0 Premier League win at Liverpool on Sunday. He praised their display at Anfield but admitted the unresolved case remained in the back of his mind.
City have appealed against an independent commission’s findings that they breached Premier League financial rules and continue to deny wrongdoing.
Neville wants a break from covering City
Speaking on Sky Sports after the match, Neville revealed that he had discussed stepping away from City assignments while recording his podcast.
He asked whether Sky could “take me off Manchester City games” for the next few months while the verdicts were being heard, adding: “I would be absolutely delighted.”
Despite that request, Neville acknowledged the quality of City’s performance. He praised how the players stood together during Liverpool’s early pressure before taking control after Ryan Gravenberch’s dismissal.
His frustration was that a victory at Anfield should have allowed him to praise the team without immediately having to consider events away from the pitch.
The request concerned his own commentary assignments. It was not a call for Sky to stop showing City’s matches.
Why the financial case overshadowed his verdict
Neville said the possibility of the findings being upheld left him questioning what City’s results would ultimately mean for the league.
He suggested that confirmation of the verdicts could change their position, describing the situation as “really bad for the Premier League”.
That was his assessment of the potential consequences, rather than confirmation of a particular punishment or an appeal outcome.
The concern also shaped his podcast discussion with Jamie Carragher. Both argued that the unresolved case was affecting how City’s success was viewed, even after an impressive away win.
City’s appeal leaves those questions open. Neville’s public request does not establish that Sky has agreed to change his assignments.
