Cristiano Ronaldo Sends Lionel Messi Classy Message After Argentina Farewell
Ronaldo praised his long-time rival after Messi brought his 21-year Argentina career to an emotional close.
Cristiano Ronaldo has sent a respectful message to Lionel Messi following his long-time rival’s final appearance for Argentina.
Ronaldo responded directly beneath Messi’s emotional Instagram post after the Argentina captain brought his 21-year international career to an end.
“Leo, so many years defending your country and a history that will last forever,” Ronaldo wrote.
“All my respect for what you have achieved with Argentina. A hug.”
Messi played his final international match on Tuesday as Argentina recorded a 3-0 friendly victory over Benin at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires.
The 39-year-old assisted goals for Nicolas Otamendi and Nico Paz before scoring from the penalty spot during an emotional farewell attended by more than 85,000 supporters.
Messi later reflected on his decision through Instagram, admitting that he already missed wearing Argentina’s blue and white shirt.
The Inter Miami forward finished his international career with 208 appearances and 126 goals. He captained Argentina to the 2022 World Cup and also helped his country win the Copa America in 2021 and 2024.
Ronaldo and Messi spent more than a decade competing for football’s biggest individual and team honours, particularly during their respective spells with Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Their rivalry produced years of arguments between supporters, but both players have repeatedly spoken about the respect they hold for one another.
Ronaldo’s tribute arrived during a turbulent period in his own international career. The Portugal captain recently apologised after leaving the national-team camp and said he would accept any punishment resulting from his departure.
Whatever uncertainty surrounds Ronaldo’s future with Portugal, his response to Messi offered a simple acknowledgement of an international career that will be remembered permanently.
