Roy Keane Says Man City’s Premier League Medals Belong in the Bin

Roy Keane has advised Manchester City’s title-winning players to place their medals in the bin following the verdict against the club.

The former Manchester United captain delivered his preferred disposal method while working for ITV before England’s match against Czechia on Tuesday evening.

“If I was a player, I’d be 100 per cent sticking those medals in the bin,” Keane said. “Of course you would. It’s cheating.”

“They won it on the pitch because cheating was going on.”

Manchester City have been found guilty of serious breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules across nine seasons between 2009 and 2018.

The independent commission concluded that the club used sham commercial agreements to inflate its revenue and reduce its reported costs. City won eight major trophies during the period, including three Premier League titles.

Keane argued that the club’s actions had damaged those achievements regardless of what the players knew about events above them.

“They knew it would hurt a lot of people, but they’ve still done it,” he added.

City continue to deny wrongdoing and have announced their intention to appeal the decision. Their punishment will be determined separately, with possible sanctions including fines, points deductions and other sporting penalties.

No decision has been made about stripping trophies, and the players have not been asked to return their medals.

Keane has nevertheless reached the punishment stage independently and identified the appropriate container.

Manchester City must still await the commission’s sanction and complete any appeal. Their former players can apparently use the time to check which colour bin accepts Premier League medals.
