Aston Villa Sign Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Immediately Leave Him Out of Champions League Squad
Aston Villa have completed the signing of Taylor Harwood-Bellis for a fee potentially reaching £30 million before immediately removing the Champions League from his immediate list of responsibilities.
The 24-year-old joined Villa from Southampton on transfer deadline day, with an initial £25 million accompanied by a possible £5 million in add-ons.
During his first club interview, Harwood-Bellis described Champions League football as an additional attraction of the move and said the opportunity filled him with “nothing but excitement.”
He added that he could not wait to demonstrate his ability on football’s biggest stage.
The wait will now continue until at least February.
Harwood-Bellis was omitted from Villa’s 23-man List A squad for the league phase, just days after signing and shortly after the club published an article detailing his journey back to Europe’s leading competition.
His absence resulted partly from UEFA’s registration regulations. Champions League clubs can name 25 List A players, but eight places must be occupied by locally trained players and four of those must have been developed by the club itself.
Villa possess only two eligible club-trained players, meaning two spaces had to remain vacant and Unai Emery could submit a maximum squad of 23.
Harwood-Bellis spent his formative years at Manchester City, making him association-trained rather than club-trained at Villa. He therefore qualified for precisely the wrong type of homegrown status.
The centre-back was left out alongside fellow summer arrival Modou Keba Cisse and teenage forward Brian Madjo. Nine other new signings were included, suggesting Villa’s European recruitment programme had reached capacity shortly before Harwood-Bellis arrived.
His Champions League season may not be completely over. Clubs can register three additional players before the knockout rounds, while a temporary replacement may also be permitted if a registered outfield player suffers an illness or injury lasting at least 60 days.
For now, Harwood-Bellis can concentrate on domestic football while supporting the European campaign that helped attract him to the club.
Villa have provided the prestigious Premier League move. The Champions League bonus remains subject to availability.
