Manchester United spent approximately £150 million rebuilding their midfield this summer, an investment Mark Goldbridge believes deserves a score below three out of ten.

United completed deals for Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, with the three transfers potentially costing £155 million once add-ons are included.

Goldbridge delivered his assessment on The United Stand after the transfer window closed, having remembered director of football Jason Wilcox’s invitation for supporters to judge the club when its business was complete.

“It is judgement day,” Goldbridge announced.

The verdict was not favourable.

Goldbridge described it as the worst transfer window he could remember and argued that United had failed to strengthen several areas of Michael Carrick’s squad.

“No left-back, no winger, no right-back, no centre-back, no backup striker,” he said. “You’re generous if you give it a three.”

His frustration was increased by the belief that Baleba, Santos and Tielemans were not United’s preferred targets at the beginning of the summer. He also pointed to Marcus Rashford remaining at Old Trafford despite the club reportedly wanting to sell him to Barcelona.

Joshua Zirkzee also stayed after declining opportunities to leave, while a lack of further sales reportedly restricted United’s ability to strengthen their defence.

United did not do nothing. Spending close to £150 million on three midfielders is generally accepted as activity.

The problem, according to Goldbridge, is that the club spent enough to rebuild an entire department while leaving most of the other departments exactly where they were.

Wilcox asked to be judged at the end of the transfer window. Goldbridge has complied and concluded that £150 million bought three midfielders, five missing positions and a score below three.
