Kylian Mbappé has endorsed his own Ballon d’Or candidacy before reassuring the other contenders that disagreement remains permitted.
The Real Madrid forward was asked by France Football which player he would support for the 2026 award. His answer did not require extensive deliberation.
“For the Ballon d’Or, I vote for myself,” Mbappé said.
The France captain argued that the prize recognises individual performance and that his achievements provide a legitimate case despite Real Madrid ending last season without a trophy.
Mbappé scored 10 goals in eight matches at the 2026 World Cup, taking his overall total to 22 and becoming the competition’s leading goalscorer of all time.
Those numbers, he suggested, should remain significant regardless of whether his club collected any silverware alongside them.
Mbappé also noted that no Ballon d’Or winner has ever received every available vote, meaning there will always be somebody who believes another player deserved it. He therefore accepted that people might examine the candidates and reach a conclusion that was not Kylian Mbappé.
“We are not in a dictatorship of thought,” he explained.
This was an important clarification from the only person in the interview who had just announced his intention to vote for himself.
Mbappé does not actually possess a Ballon d’Or ballot. The winner is selected by international journalists, so his personal vote will not be included in the final count. It has nevertheless been declared more confidently than most of theirs.
His argument is not unreasonable. The award is individual, he is the leading scorer in World Cup history and becoming the leading scorer in World Cup history is generally considered a useful individual achievement.
There is simply something wonderfully complete about being asked who deserves football’s greatest personal prize, immediately selecting yourself and then confirming that alternative opinions remain constitutionally protected.
The Ballon d’Or process is not a dictatorship. Mbappé has merely announced the correct answer in advance.
