Enzo Maresca Says ‘I Know Nothing’ After Man City’s Guilty Verdict

Enzo Maresca has responded to questions surrounding Manchester City’s guilty verdict with a message explaining that he knows nothing.

The City manager shared a quote attributed to Greek philosopher Socrates on Instagram: “The only thing I know is that I know nothing.”

He accompanied it with the words: “Time to breathe. Time to analyse. Time to learn.”

When Maresca was approached for comment on Saturday morning and asked whether he was seeking reassurance from the club over its continued insistence that it had done nothing wrong, his representatives supplied a screenshot of the post.

It was an unusually philosophical way of declining to provide any reassurance at all.

City were found guilty on Friday of 114 of the 115 charges brought against them by the Premier League. The breaches concern the accuracy of financial information provided by the club across nine seasons between 2009 and 2018.

The club have consistently denied wrongdoing and are expected to appeal the decision. No punishment has yet been determined, with possible sanctions ranging from a substantial fine and points deduction to more serious sporting consequences.

Maresca only became City manager during the summer and was not responsible for the club during the period covered by the charges.

His Instagram post also included a photograph of his bare feet on the grass alongside several images from his international-break holiday. Comments were disabled, preventing followers from asking whether the breathing, analysing and learning had produced any additional information.

Reddit provided its own interpretation. The leading response observed that Maresca had apparently thought he could escape with a Socrates quote, while others argued he sounded more like Manuel from Fawlty Towers or Jon Snow.

Maresca has not confirmed that the post was intended as a direct statement about the verdict. Its timing and subsequent use by his representatives nevertheless ensured it would be interpreted that way.

Manchester City must now prepare an appeal against one of the most significant judgments in English football history.

Their manager has entered that process equipped with Socrates, bare feet and no further information.
