Enzo Fernández Leaves Chelsea and Immediately Starts Discussing Big Clubs

Enzo Fernández has completed a £125 million move from Chelsea to Manchester City and immediately begun discussing his lifelong ambition to represent a club of considerable size.

The Argentina midfielder joined City on a five-year contract after the two Premier League clubs agreed a fee equalling the British transfer record.

Speaking during his first interview as a City player, Fernández said: “I always dreamed of being at a club as big as City.”

Fernández did not explicitly describe Chelsea as a small club. He merely spent three-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge, left for Manchester and used his first interview to announce that he had always dreamed of reaching somewhere this big.

Chelsea signed Fernández from Benfica for £106.7 million in January 2023, making him the most expensive player in British football at the time. He went on to win the Conference League and Club World Cup with the club before being sold for a profit of more than £18 million.

The 25-year-old will now reunite with Enzo Maresca, having previously worked under the Italian at Chelsea. He said City’s recent success and desire to continue making history made the move a major challenge.

Fernández also revealed that he did not hesitate after learning of City’s interest, allowing Chelsea supporters to enjoy two carefully timed observations about the relative attraction of their former player’s new club.

The midfielder’s comments will inevitably be interpreted as a reference to Chelsea, despite their name never appearing in the sentence.

Chelsea can therefore insist Fernández did not question their status as a major club. He simply left them and immediately announced that playing for one had always been his dream.
