Declan Rice has promised to dye his hair red if Arsenal retain the Premier League title, after a young supporter successfully added personal grooming to the consequences of the club’s title defence.

The agreement was reached during a question-and-answer video published on Arsenal’s social channels.

Rice was asked whether he would allow the supporter to choose a new hair colour if the Gunners won the league for a second consecutive season. After establishing that the proposed colours were red and white, the England midfielder returned with a counteroffer.

“I’ll do a deal with you,” Rice said. “I’ll get red highlights in them.”

The revised terms were accepted, although no agreement appears to have been reached over the precise shade, number of highlights or how long Rice would be required to keep them.

Rice played a significant role as Arsenal won their first Premier League title in 22 years last season. Mikel Arteta’s side have also opened the new campaign with consecutive victories as they attempt to retain the trophy for the first time since the 1930s.

Red hair already holds an established place in Arsenal history through Freddie Ljungberg, whose distinctive appearance became closely associated with the club’s successful teams under Arsène Wenger.

Rice will now be required to produce his own version if Arsenal finish above the rest of the Premier League again.

The remaining members of the squad must complete a 38-match title defence. Rice has secured the considerably easier side of the deal.
