Footballers Can No Longer Use Instagram Without Starting A Transfer Rumour

Vinícius Júnior removed the contents of his Instagram account this week and briefly provided football with another source of transfer information.

The Real Madrid forward deleted his posts, profile picture and biography while being linked with Arsenal, prompting supporters to interpret the unexplained social-media reset as a possible indication that something was happening with his future.

Something was happening.

Real Madrid announced on Thursday that Vinícius had signed a new contract keeping him at the club until 2032, bringing months of speculation over his future to an end and giving his Instagram activity a considerably less Arsenal-related conclusion.

It was another example of a familiar part of the modern transfer window, in which footballers no longer necessarily need to discuss transfers in order to provide transfer updates.

A like can be sufficient.

Mykhailo Mudryk famously liked an Instagram post featuring the hashtag #FreeMudryk while Arsenal were attempting to sign him from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023. He eventually joined Chelsea instead.

Matheus Cunha later attracted similar attention when his account appeared to like a supporter comment reading “Manchester United soon” while speculation surrounded his future at Wolves.

Benjamin Šeško managed to create another variation last summer by following Liverpool on Instagram and pinning a post from RB Leipzig’s match against them. Supporters noticed both and began considering whether his social-media arrangements represented an indication of where he wanted to play next.

Sometimes the activity may be deliberate. Sometimes it may mean nothing at all. The transfer window does not particularly require that distinction to be established before analysis begins.

Following a club becomes interest. Liking a photograph becomes preference. Removing photographs becomes dissatisfaction. An emoji can require several hundred words of further examination.

Players, meanwhile, still have social-media accounts on which they occasionally have to do things.

During the rest of the year, these activities are generally known as using Instagram.

During the transfer window, they are developments.
