Michael Carrick’s evening did not get much easier when the final whistle went in Como. There was still the walk towards Manchester United’s away end.
After watching his side lose 4-1 in the Champions League, the United manager approached the travelling supporters and raised his hands in a gesture of apology.
It was a miserable finish to a night that had gone wrong almost immediately. United were behind inside two minutes and never recovered, with Como building a four-goal lead before the visitors managed a consolation.
Nico Paz scored twice for the hosts, with Tasos Douvikas and Jacobo Ramon also finding the net. Joshua Zirkzee’s stoppage-time reply did little to soften the scoreline.
For supporters who had made the trip to Italy, it was another difficult watch. The defeat stretched United’s winless run to seven matches across all competitions.
Carrick’s gesture acknowledged the fans left in the away section after a performance that had given them precious little to applaud.
United now return to Premier League action against Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday. Their last victory remains the September Champions League win over Sabah.
