Emi Martinez says Chelsea clean sheet is ‘most important thing’ in hospital message after surgery

The Chelsea goalkeeper thanked supporters from hospital after successful surgery on a fractured jaw sustained against Everton.

Emiliano Martinez has shared an update from his hospital bed after surgery, telling supporters that Chelsea’s victory and clean sheet were the most important things.

The goalkeeper posted on Instagram on Sunday following the injury that forced him off during Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League win at Everton.

Martinez accompanied his message with a photograph showing him in a hospital gown, raising his hand towards the camera.

“Thank you all for the messages, the operation went well,” he wrote in a statement translated from Spanish.

“The most important thing is that we won with a clean sheet. We’ll be back in a few weeks.”

The post offered reassurance after his departure on a stretcher had interrupted Chelsea’s afternoon at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

His suggestion of returning in a few weeks is his own assessment. Chelsea confirmed that the operation was successful without announcing a date for his comeback.

What happened to Emi Martinez against Everton?

Martinez was injured in a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite as they challenged for a cross during the second half.

He received lengthy treatment on the pitch before being carried off and taken to hospital. Further assessment revealed a fractured jaw requiring surgery.

Chelsea said everyone at the club wished him a speedy recovery and would support him throughout.

Mike Penders replaced Martinez to make his Premier League debut and helped Chelsea complete the victory, with Pedro Neto scoring both goals.

The result also ended Chelsea’s nine-month wait for a Premier League clean sheet, their first in the competition since January.
