Roda JC player appeals for penalty without realising he has scored

Mitchel Paulissen wanted a penalty. What he had missed was that his free kick had already gone in.

The Roda JC player provided an unusual moment during Friday’s 1-1 home draw with Jong PSV, appealing for handball instead of celebrating his equaliser.

Paulissen was so focused on making his case to the referee that he failed to notice the outcome of his own effort. While he protested, the ball had found the net and Roda were back level.

Paulissen’s free kick rescues a point for Roda

The goal capped a late turnaround in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie match.

Paulissen had come on at half-time, but Roda fell behind when Austyn Jones scored from a corner. Jong PSV then had the chance to double their advantage from the penalty spot.

Goalkeeper Justin Treichel kept Roda in the game by saving the spot kick, before Paulissen’s free kick brought the hosts level.

Roda continued pushing for a winner but had to settle for a point. Paulissen’s appeal had come with the best possible consolation: the equaliser he had been too busy protesting to notice.
