Goalkeeper Makes Bizarre Backheel Save While Still Appealing for Offside

PSV loanee Niek Schiks produced an unusual backheel rescue while appealing for offside during a Dutch league match.

Goalkeeper Niek Schiks somehow kept the ball out with a backheel while still raising an arm to appeal for offside.

The PSV loanee, playing for Dutch club RKC Waalwijk, hooked the ball away from his goal line from behind his standing leg during Friday’s match against Heracles Almelo.

His unusual intervention prevented the hosts from taking the lead in a game that remained goalless until half-time.

Schiks pulls off an unlikely rescue

Jean-Paul N’Djoli’s shot travelled towards the far corner, struck the inside of the post and rolled towards the goal line.

Schiks was already appealing for offside, but managed to reach the ball with his heel and divert it away. No goal was awarded, and play continued.

The goalkeeper is spending the season at Waalwijk on loan from PSV to gain more playing time. The match took place in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie, the Netherlands’ second tier.

Despite his rescue, Waalwijk eventually lost 3-0. Tristan van Gilst scored a penalty after the break, before Damon Mirani and Manny Rodriguez added the other goals.
