Manchester City Reportedly Found Guilty of 114 Charges and Still Have No Punishment

Manchester City have reportedly been found guilty of 114 breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations, leaving English football considerably closer to a conclusion without providing one.

The Athletic reports that an independent commission upheld all but one of the 115 charges brought against City following the Premier League’s investigation.

Sanctions have not yet been decided, every possible punishment reportedly remains available and City are expected to appeal against the verdict.

It means a case that has already occupied several years has finally produced 114 reported guilty findings and no confirmed consequences.

The Premier League charged City in February 2023 over alleged breaches covering the period between 2009 and 2018. The accusations concerned the accuracy of financial information, sponsorship revenue, payments to players and managers, compliance with financial regulations and the club’s cooperation with the investigation.

City have consistently denied wrongdoing.

Responding to the report, the club insisted that the Premier League process remained ongoing, with significant elements still to be completed. Its position therefore remains unchanged despite an independent commission reportedly ruling against it on almost every charge.

Ordinarily, a verdict establishes how a case has ended. This one has instead introduced several new questions involving sanctions, appeals and how many more years everyone may need to reserve for the process.

The reported decision also leaves City with the unusual distinction of successfully defending one charge while waiting to discover the combined punishment for the other 114.

After a lengthy investigation, an extended hearing and years of speculation, English football finally has the verdict for which it had been waiting.

It will now continue waiting.
