Arsenal Spend £75m On Bruno Guimaraes To Make Picking Their Midfield Even More Difficult

Arsenal have completed the signing of Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United for around £75million, adding another midfielder to a squad which was not experiencing an obvious shortage of them.

The Brazil international has left Newcastle after four-and-a-half years at St James’ Park and signed a long-term contract with the Premier League champions.

Guimarães arrives after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s leading midfielders at Newcastle, where he became club captain and helped end the club’s long wait for domestic silverware by lifting the Carabao Cup in 2025.

Mikel Arteta now gets to work out where to put him.

Arsenal already possessed a midfield containing Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, Martín Zubimendi, Eberechi Eze, Mikel Merino and Myles Lewis-Skelly before deciding that £75million of Bruno Guimarães would provide some useful additional options.

The 28-year-old brings considerable Premier League experience after making more than 150 appearances for Newcastle, while his ability to operate in different midfield roles gives Arteta further flexibility ahead of Arsenal’s title defence.

Arteta described Guimarães as a player capable of taking Arsenal to another level, with the Brazilian joining a squad attempting to build on last season’s Premier League success.

Finding minutes for all of Arsenal’s midfielders may now require slightly more consideration.

Rice and Ødegaard have been central figures under Arteta, while Zubimendi, Eze and Merino already provide different options across midfield. Guimarães now gives the Arsenal manager another established international who would ordinarily expect to play regularly.

It is the sort of selection problem most managers would happily accept.

Arsenal wanted greater squad depth ahead of another season competing on several fronts and have now acquired it.

Deciding which of their midfielders actually constitute the midfield comes next.
