Liverpool Need A Winger For The Start Of The Season And Bid £50m For One Who Will Miss It

Liverpool have had a £50million bid rejected for Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh as they continue their search for another attacking option before the transfer window closes.

The 22-year-old has emerged as a leading target for Liverpool following Mohamed Salah’s departure, with the club looking to strengthen on the right side of their attack ahead of the new Premier League season.

There is one immediate complication.

Minteh is injured.

The Gambia international suffered a right-leg injury during Brighton’s pre-season victory over Roma and subsequently underwent surgery. He is expected to remain unavailable for several more weeks, ruling him out of the beginning of the campaign regardless of where he is playing.

Liverpool remain sufficiently interested to have offered £50million.

Brighton rejected the opening bid and are under little pressure to sell a player who remains contracted until 2029. Minteh joined the club from Newcastle United for £30million in 2024 and has established himself as one of Brighton’s regular attacking options over the past two seasons.

The timing also makes a sale particularly inconvenient for Brighton. Danny Welbeck has already left for Chelsea, while Kaoru Mitoma is injured, leaving the club with fewer attacking options of their own heading into the new season.

Minteh is understood to be open to joining Liverpool, meaning the injury itself does not appear to have discouraged either the player or the interested club.

It has simply made Liverpool’s immediate problem slightly less immediate to solve.

They need another winger for the beginning of the season.

Their £50million choice should be available several weeks after it.
