Rodri was briefly required to establish his own involvement in an argument following Spain’s World Cup final victory over Argentina after Nicolás Otamendi confronted him over pre-match complaints about refereeing.

The Argentina defender approached the Spain captain during the tense scenes before the medal ceremony and accused both Rodri and Aymeric Laporte of having spent the week complaining about officials.

This appeared to come as some news to Rodri.

“What have I said? Laporte?” the midfielder responded, as the discussion moved towards comments made by his Spain teammate before the final.

Laporte had questioned the treatment of Argentina’s physical approach in previous matches, saying there had been incidents which officials had allowed to pass and suggesting the referee would need to manage similar behaviour in the final.

Otamendi had evidently expanded those remarks into a broader Spanish position.

Rodri, meanwhile, appeared to spend part of the confrontation attempting to determine exactly which section of it belonged to him.

Mikel Oyarzabal eventually moved in to calm the exchange, although by that stage Rodri had successfully established that the comments being discussed had, at the very least, originated somewhere else.

Spain had already won the World Cup.

The post-match task was now establishing who had said what during the week before it.
