Cristiano Ronaldo Reportedly Suspended by Portugal After Walking Out of Camp
Ronaldo accepted that his Portugal walkout deserved punishment, with reports now pointing to an automatic provisional suspension.
Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly provisionally suspended from representing Portugal after walking out of the national team camp. He has already admitted that his departure deserved punishment.
The suspension is reported to have taken effect automatically under federation rules, with the length of any final ban still to be decided.
Ronaldo’s departure followed his dispute with manager Jorge Jesus. In his subsequent statement, the captain accused Jesus of breaking promises over playing time and how their disagreement would be explained publicly.
Jesus denied making an agreement with Ronaldo, although he left the door open for the forward to return.
Ronaldo apologised to his teammates and supporters, accepting that his position as captain made leaving camp more serious.
“The consequences of my actions must be assessed and punished by the Portuguese Football Federation,” he said.
How long could Ronaldo’s Portugal suspension last?
The federation’s regulations provide for a suspension of between one and six months when a player leaves national team duty without justification.
Legal experts interviewed separately by A Bola and RTP explained that an automatic provisional suspension applies before the final disciplinary punishment is determined. The six-month figure is therefore the upper end of the reported range, rather than a ban already handed to Ronaldo.
A final punishment has not been publicly confirmed. The federation’s disciplinary announcement on Friday contained no reference to Ronaldo, according to Record.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, has made clear that the walkout does not mean he is retiring from international football. He remains available to represent Portugal after serving any suspension, provided he is fit and playing for his club.
