Francisco Conceicao was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in the space of 10 seconds during Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway.

The unusual dismissal occurred in the 86th minute, moments before the Portugal winger was due to be substituted.

Conceicao went down inside the penalty area following a challenge from Norway defender Leo Ostigard and appealed for a penalty.

Italian referee Maurizio Mariani rejected the appeal and booked Conceicao for his protests.

As he began walking towards the touchline, Conceicao raised his thumb towards the referee in an apparently sarcastic gesture.

Mariani immediately produced a second yellow card, leaving Conceicao dismissed before Portugal could complete the planned substitution.

Pedro Neto had been waiting to replace the 23-year-old but was forced to return to the bench following the red card.

Sky Italia reported that only 10 seconds separated the two bookings.

Portugal were leading 2-1 at the time after recovering from Kristoffer Ajer’s opening goal for Norway.

Joao Cancelo equalised two minutes later before Goncalo Ramos completed the comeback with the winning goal in the 79th minute.

Jorge Jesus’s side survived the closing stages with 10 players to record their fourth victory from four Nations League matches and secure a place in the quarter-finals.

Conceicao will be suspended when Portugal host Denmark in their next Nations League fixture on 14 November.
