JJ Gabriel Asks to Leave Manchester United on Eve of Possible First-Team Debut
Manchester United prospect JJ Gabriel has reportedly asked to leave the club immediately, one day before he could have made his senior debut against Brighton.
The 15-year-old requested that United cancel his academy registration despite being considered for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie at Old Trafford.
Had he featured, Gabriel would have had an opportunity to become the youngest first-team player in Manchester United’s history. Instead, one of the club’s most highly rated prospects appears to be seeking the quickest available route out of Carrington.
United are reportedly surprised by the request and believe they have demonstrated a clear pathway towards senior football. Gabriel has trained with the first team, featured during pre-season and held discussions about his development with senior figures at the club.
He also appeared to be moving closer to a competitive debut after scoring a hat-trick against Sabah on his UEFA Youth League debut earlier this month.
Gabriel joined United at the age of 11 and scored 26 goals in 29 youth appearances last season. He subsequently became the youngest recipient of the club’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award.
Those achievements have attracted attention from several major European clubs, with Barcelona and Manchester City previously linked with the teenager.
United reportedly hope the situation can still be resolved and do not consider Gabriel free to leave. He remains registered with the club until the end of the season and cannot sign a professional contract until he turns 17.
The affair therefore involves a player too young to sign professional terms, potentially becoming United’s youngest-ever debutant and asking to leave before receiving the opportunity.
Most academy prospects have to wait years before discovering whether a pathway to the first team exists.
Gabriel appears to have found one and requested directions to the exit.
