VAR Allows Haaland Goal Despite Offside Fernández Attempting a Header

Manchester City were awarded the winning goal against Manchester United after VAR decided that an offside player attempting to head the ball had not become sufficiently involved.

Erling Haaland scored in the 60th minute at Old Trafford, converting Joško Gvardiol’s cross at the far post to give ten-man City a 1–0 victory.

The assistant referee initially raised the flag against Haaland, but semi-automated offside technology established that Patrick Dorgu had played the striker onside.

That resolved one offside question and revealed another.

Enzo Fernández was standing in an offside position between the cross and Haaland. The City midfielder moved towards the ball and attempted to head it while competing in the same area as Lisandro Martínez, but failed to make contact.

VAR concluded that Fernández had neither played the ball nor sufficiently affected Martínez’s ability to defend. Haaland’s finish was therefore awarded following a review lasting almost three minutes.

The offside law does not punish players simply for occupying an offside position. They must touch the ball, challenge an opponent or otherwise interfere with play.

Fernández attempted to do one of those things but missed, leaving officials to determine that his unsuccessful participation did not qualify as participation.

The goal was particularly damaging for United because City had been playing with ten men since the 23rd minute. Phil Foden was shown a straight red card after kicking out at Bruno Fernandes, giving the hosts a numerical advantage for more than an hour.

That advantage did not prevent City from delivering a cross towards two attackers inside the penalty area, including one who required an extended video assessment to establish whether he was involved.

United had another half-hour to equalise against ten men but could not find a way through. Gianluigi Donnarumma denied Bryan Mbeumo late in stoppage time as City preserved their lead and maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season.

The official record will show a Haaland goal and a Manchester City victory.

Fernández will receive no assist, although his non-involvement required considerably more explanation than the finish.
