João Félix Refuses to Speak in Case He Exposes Entire Saudi League

João Félix declined to speak to reporters after Al-Nassr’s defeat to Al-Ittihad because doing so might apparently have exposed the entire Saudi Pro League.

The Portuguese forward was visibly frustrated following Saturday’s 2-1 loss in Jeddah, which ended Al-Nassr’s perfect start to the league season.

George Ilenikhena scored twice inside the opening 22 minutes for Al-Ittihad before Angelo Gabriel reduced the deficit shortly before half-time. Al-Nassr dominated much of the second period but could not find an equaliser.

Félix was booked for a challenge on Richard Ríos and continued remonstrating with the officials after the final whistle.

When approached by reporters while walking through the mixed zone, he refused to stop and explained: “I won’t speak to you. If I do, I’ll expose this league.”

It was an unusual approach to avoiding controversy.

Félix did not identify what he intended to expose, which people might be involved or whether his complaint concerned the officiating during the match. He also presented no specific allegation or evidence before leaving for the team bus.

The result was a statement serious enough to create widespread speculation while containing none of the information required to resolve it.

Ordinarily, refusing to give an interview limits the number of headlines a player can generate. Félix instead found a sentence capable of producing considerably more attention than a complete explanation probably would have done.

His comments arrived after Al-Nassr suffered their first league defeat under Ange Postecoglou, leaving them three points behind early leaders Al-Hilal.

Félix may decide to clarify his warning once emotions have settled. Until then, the Saudi Pro League remains unexposed but now has considerably more people wondering what it is hiding.
